10 Smart Ways to Save Money on Your Disney World Vacation
A Walt Disney World vacation doesn't have to break the bank. With a little planning and a few insider tricks, you can stretch your vacation budget while still enjoying all the magic. As a Disney travel planner—and someone who has visited countless times with kids, adults, and multi-generational groups—these are my favorite ways to save money without sacrificing the experience.
10. Choose the Right Resort for Your Family
One of the biggest decisions you'll make is where to stay, and it's also one of the best opportunities to save money.
Disney's Value Resorts are perfect for families who want to spend most of their day in the parks and are looking to maximize their budget. They offer fun Disney theming, great pools, complimentary transportation, and all the perks of staying at a Disney Resort hotel.
If your family plans to enjoy more resort time, wants additional amenities, or values extra transportation options, a Moderate or Deluxe Resort may be worth the additional cost. Choosing the resort that matches your family's vacation style ensures you're spending money where it matters most.
9. Take Advantage of Every Disney Resort Perk
When you stay at a Disney Resort hotel, you're paying for more than just a room—you're getting valuable benefits that can save both time and money.
Be sure to:
Take advantage of Early Theme Park Entry, which allows Disney Resort guests to enter any park 30 minutes before official opening each day. The lines are shorter and the crowds are lighter first thing in the morning.
Make your dining reservations 60 days before arrival for the best restaurant selection.
Reserve your Lightning Lane selections (a paid system that replaces the old FastPass system) seven days before your vacation to secure the most popular attractions at the best times. This service allows your family to skip the lines, saving you time and energy.
If you're staying at a Deluxe Resort, don't miss Extended Evening Hours, offered on select nights, which allow guests to enjoy certain parks after regular closing with lower crowds.
These perks can make a huge difference in how much you accomplish each day.
8. Enjoy Your Resort
Don't feel like every minute has to be spent inside the parks.
Every Disney Resort offers activities included with your stay, including:
Beautiful themed pools
Poolside games and entertainment
Nightly campfires with marshmallow roasting
Movies Under the Stars
One of our favorite budget-friendly evenings is ordering a pizza from the resort's quick-service restaurant, relaxing by the pool, and enjoying a movie together. These slower moments often become some of our favorite family memories.
7. Kids' Meals Aren't Just for Kids
One of my favorite money-saving tricks is ordering a kids' meal at Disney quick-service restaurants.
Kids' meals include an entrée, two sides, and a small beverage—and they're often nearly half the price of an adult meal, which doesn't include a drink.
For many adults, it's the perfect portion for lunch.
Pro Tip: Save the included clementine or apple slices in your park bag for a healthy snack later in the day.
6. Buy a Popcorn Bucket
Purchase a refillable popcorn bucket at the beginning of your trip for just under $15. You can then refill it at popcorn carts throughout the parks and resorts for only about $2.25 plus tax, as many times as you’d like during your stay.
Even better? The refill works at specialty locations like the maple popcorn cart in EPCOT's Canada Pavilion. If your family enjoys snacking throughout the day, this is one of the best values at Walt Disney World.
5. Have Groceries Delivered
Skip paying theme park prices for every snack. For reference, snacks in the park and at the resort can cost $4 to $10 each and bottle of water is $4.25 at the time of this post.
Have groceries delivered directly to your Disney Resort before or shortly after you arrive. If your groceries are delivered before your room is ready, don't worry—Disney Resort Bell Services will store your order in their temperature-controlled storage area, including refrigerated items, until you're able to access your room. Once your room is ready, you can simply stop by Bell Services to pick up your order or have it delivered to your room (a small delivery fee may apply).
Some of our must-have items include:
Bottled water
Soda
Granola bars
Fruit
Uncrustables
Microwavable mac and cheese
Chips
Candy
Sunscreen
Diapers and wipes
Disney also allows guests to bring food and non-alcoholic beverages into the parks, so pack snacks each morning and save yourself a surprising amount over the course of your vacation.
Just remember—glass containers are not permitted.
4. Lightning Lanes Are Worth the Investment
While Lightning Lane passes are an added expense, they are a paid system that allows you to skip standby lines for select attractions and significantly reduce wait times—especially at Magic Kingdom.
More time riding attractions means more time enjoying entertainment, grabbing a snack, exploring the parks, or taking a break instead of standing in line.
Sometimes spending a little more upfront actually increases the value of your vacation by helping you experience much more.
3. Buy Your Disney Gear Before You Leave Home
It's tempting to buy everything once you arrive, but you'll save significantly by shopping ahead. You can even have these items shipped directly to your resort.
Purchase items like:
Rain ponchos/stroller covers
Hats
Personal fans
Cooling towels
Sweatshirts
Disney T-shirts
Minnie ears
Portable Chargers
You'll often find the same essentials for much less at your favorite retailers or online before your trip.
2. Collect Disney Gift Cards Throughout the Year
This is one of our favorite ways to budget for Disney vacations.
Disney Gift Cards can be used almost everywhere on property, including resort stays, park tickets, dining. Many retailers, including Target and Sam's Club, regularly offer Disney Gift Cards at a discount. You can often save 5%-10% - which add up quickly. For example, a $500 gift card purchased at a 5% discount is $25. Our family chooses to put that savings toward a souvenir or a dining experience.
Just be careful to purchase Disney Gift Cards, not Disney+ streaming gift cards.
1. Book with a Disney Travel Planner
Perhaps the biggest money-saving tip of all is booking your vacation with an experienced Disney travel planner.
A travel planner can help you:
Watch for new discounts and promotions
Recommend the best resort for your budget
Match your vacation to your family's interests and stage of life
Build a personalized touring plan
Maximize your park time
Avoid costly planning mistakes
Having a plan—even one with flexibility built in—means you'll spend less time wondering where to eat or what to do next and more time making magical memories.
Bonus Hack: Arrive Early and Stay Late
One of my favorite ways to get even more value out of a Disney vacation is to maximize your arrival and departure days.
If you book an early flight to Orlando, you can enjoy almost an entire extra day without paying for an additional night at your resort. Even if your room isn't ready yet, your vacation officially begins the moment you arrive at your Disney Resort. You are welcome to use the pools, dining, transportation, and amenities while Bell Services stores your luggage.
Disney Resort hotels will hold your luggage, and you can start enjoying your vacation right away. Head to the pool, explore your resort, visit Disney Springs, or even spend the day at one of Disney's water parks before checking into your room later that afternoon.
The same strategy works on departure day. Instead of booking an early morning flight, consider choosing one later in the afternoon or evening. After checking out, Bell Services can store your luggage while you enjoy one last relaxing morning by the pool, a final stroll through Disney Springs, or a few more hours in the parks before heading to the airport.
A little strategic flight planning can add nearly two extra vacation days to your trip—without adding another night's hotel cost.
